Private Tour to Prison Island

Overview

The island was initially intended to serve as a detention center for slaves who were waiting to be sold or transported to other parts of the world. However, when the slave trade was abolished in 1873, the island was repurposed as a quarantine station for yellow fever cases.

Today, the island serves as a historical monument, where visitors can learn about the island’s history and view the old prison buildings.

Apart from the prison cells, the island is also home to a variety of other attractions. The island is known for its giant tortoises, which were brought to the island in the late 19th century as a gift from the British governor of the Seychelles. Today, the tortoises, which can weigh up to 600 pounds and live for over 100 years, are a major draw for tourists visiting the island.

The island is also home to a small beach, which is ideal for swimming and sunbathing. Visitors can enjoy a variety of water sports, including snorkeling and diving, and explore the underwater world that surrounds the island.
